Hello,

As a newby, this will be an easy question for you (I think). I am totally new in midi world and also in Motif world.

I have a Motif XS and a Nord Stage 3. My wish is play on the Motif, but the sound comes from the NS3. How do I configure the Motif?

Thanks

The answer depends on how the XS will be used. Will the XS be used just to control the Nord, or will the XS also be playing some of its own sounds at the same time? The more detail you can provide, the better the reply is likely to be.

Is when we play specific songs in my band. For a song I neeneeds the sound of the Nord but play it on the Motif (because of the light wwighted key bed). In that specific song I don’t need any sound if the Motif.

For the band I use Forscore. In thus app I have all my scores. Per scires I send a program changes message to the Motif and the Nord. For that specific song I need to send a program change message so that the Motif plays the sound of the Nord. In a gig I dont have time to do a lot of configuration.

In which mode(s) (Voice, Performance, Pattern, Song, Master) do you use the XS when you gig?

One more question…
How is forScore connected to the XS - that is, which MIDI In/Out setting is being used, “MIDI” (5-pin) or “USB”?

Is connected by USB

I’m going to presume the following…
1) When the XS is playing the Nord, you don’t want to hear anything from the XS.
2) When the XS is played at other times, you don’t want it to play anything from the Nord.
If the above is not correct, please clarify.

Connect a 5-pin MIDI cable from the XS MIDI-Out to the Nord MIDI-In.

To satisfy #1, program a Voice on the XS with volume set to 0(zero), and select that Voice when you want to play the Nord. The XS MIDI transmit channel should match the Nord MIDI receive channel. ForScore should send this SysEx message…
F0 43 10 7F 03 00 00 18 00 F7
...which will change the XS MIDI In/Out setting to “MIDI”. If the Nord is set to receive MIDI via 5-pin, playing the XS keyboard will play the Nord.

Unfortunately, once the XS MIDI In/Out is set to “MIDI”, it won’t respond to messages sent via USB. Therefore to satisfy #2, MIDI In/Out would have to be reset to “USB” manually via Utility Mode. See the XS Owner’s Manual, MIDI Settings - [SF2]MIDI beginning on page 267, especially (4) MIDI In/Out on page 268.

Thank you for your replies.

So to use the XS as an external keyboard, it is only possible to use a midi cable. This does not work over USB?

The XS isn’t class compliant - it will work as a controller over USB if connected to a host running the proper driver, and with an application that can route the MIDI data to the keyboard being controlled.

As far as I know, forScore runs only on iOS devices. Does your iOS device have what’s needed to route MIDI data from the XS via USB to the Nord?

I don’t know. It is a matter of trying.

It is not a good idea to set midi manually to USB. I think the only solution is to use a midi interface like the Iconnectmidi2.
Then you can connect 2 devices with a 5-pin cable and 2 computers or Ipad with USB together.
