Hello dear friends,
just wanted to ask you something.
I recently loaded a few piano voices in my XF.
They’re currently located in the USER 4 Bank, with samples on the FL 1, and they all sound great.
After doing this, I noticed the pianos from PRE1, like the Full Grand for instance, lost their original beautiful sound though.
Would you please be so kind as to explain why that happened?
Thanks for your attention and help.

Regards,

Ted

How did you load the Voices to USER 4? If in a manner that could have changed system Parameters (such as Velocity Curve), then that might affect the sound of Preset Voices.

Hi dear 5pinDIN, and thanks for answering.
I just loaded two single voices on the Bank USR 4, writing them over Large Section and Flute Legato.

Hi dear 5pinDIN, and thanks for answering.

You’re welcome.

ted81 -

I just loaded two single voices on the Bank USR 4, writing them over Large Section and Flute Legato.

Loading single Voices in the manner you described (and making no other changes) shouldn’t have affected the sound of any Preset Voices.

Is it possible that the newly loaded Piano Voices sound significantly better to you, and that by comparison you’re not satisfied with the Preset pianos?

Also, I noticed that you had referred to the “Full Grand” Voice. That’s the name of the PRE1 A01 Voice in the Motif ES. The XF Voice in that position is “Full Concert Grand” - is that the one you mean, or did you have the ES Voice loaded in a USER location?

Hello again dear 5pinDIN, and thanks for your assistance.
Sorry, my mistake, I meant the Full Concert Grand.
It didn’t sound full-bodied like it used to.
Anyway, I just tried formatting the flash memory, did a factory reset, and the Full Concert Grand’s beauty is back now.
So something was affecting that particular voice after all…

I don’t dismiss that the sound was affected, but simply loading Voices to a User bank and/or installing Samples/Waveforms to a flash module will not affect a Preset Voice. Something else was changed.

Should you ever run into this situation again, if you save and post an “All” file it should be possible to examine it and determine what has happened.

Hi dear 5pinDIN,
I’m not sure if I understand correctly.
How do you save and post an ALL file?

Hi dear 5pinDIN,
I’m not sure if I understand correctly.
How do you save and post an ALL file?

See page 241 of the XF Reference Manual (http://download.yamaha.com/file/48531). Save it “without sample”. ZIP the resulting X3A file, and attach it to a message.

Hi dear 5pinDIN,
I loaded that piano again and, of course, the problem is back.
Anyway, I’m attaching the ALL file for you to examine.
I hope I saved it correctly.
Thanks again for your patience and help.

Regards,

Ted

Thanks for posting your “All” file.

Whatever problem you’re experiencing isn’t evident when I load the file to my own XF. The Full Concert Grand (PRE 1 A01) Voice sounds as it should to me.

Differences I see from a factory reset are…
1) The Power On mode is Voice PRE 1 (A01 Full Concert Grand)
2) There are no demo Songs or Patterns
3) USER 4 A01 is Rhodes Mark I (FL1 Waveforms not provided)
4) PRE1 A01, B06, B12 are marked as Favorites

Other Utility/System settings, including Master Effects/EQ and Velocity Curve, appear to be normal.

-----------------

If anyone else loads ted81‘s file and finds the PRE 1 A01 (Full Concert Grand) Voice sounds different than after a factory reset, please let us know.

Hi dear 5pinDIN, and thanks for answering.
Yes, USER 4 A01, the Rhodes Mark I, is in fact the voice I loaded, the one causing the problem.
The Full Concert Grand always sounds warm and full-bodied, just like a real acoustic piano, but becomes midrangey, tickling, and without the usual lower keys bass after I load that voice.
Anyway, thanks again for your kind attention and help.

Regards,

Ted

Just to make sure we haven’t missed anything…

Which mode are you playing Full Concert Grand in - Voice, or something else?

Not that I’m aware of older OS versions causing what you’ve described, but which one is installed on your XF? To check the OS version…
Press and release the [UTILITY] button to get into Utility mode.
Then press [UTILITY], [ ^ ](Cursor Up) and [F1] buttons at the same time.
What Firmware Version is displayed?

Hi dear 5pinDIN,
I’m playing it VOICE mode.
Also, I just checked the Current Version screen, and it says:

MOTIF XF Firmware Version 1.12.0
MOTIF XF Kernel Version 2.6.10_mvl401 - 1.1.1.motif_xsmc.81
MOTIF XF Contents Version 1.12.0

Thanks,

Ted

Version 1.12 (ignore the second decimal and anything after it) is an old version. There have been a few newer versions that fixed bugs and added features. I’m not saying that updating the OS will fix your current issue, but there are other reasons to do so. The most recent version is 1.50 - it includes new effects, and Yamaha provided new Voices using those effects.
