Hi I have a song file that sounds good (to me) in Cubase - no obvious distortion - punchy but not overcompressed.

But horrible in itunes - obviously distorted and overcompressed.

Need a confirmation if the sound is clear or distorted.

Any help and suggestions would be would be great!

Thanks!

Hi Gumby1240,

Whilst I am not currently in a position to listen to your music and check for the problems you’ve mentioned, iTunes IS very good at changing the loudness and often distorting the files you add to it.

It can do this if the ‘sound check’ and ‘sound enhancer’ settings are checked under the playback tab in iTunes preferences.

‘Sound check’ tries to level out all of your tracks and ‘sound enhancer’ can adjust their frequencies, so it can be a whole bowl of trouble.

Untick them both and take another listen.

A good test, would be to play it using something else, for example ‘quicktime player’ or ‘windows media player’ (or whatever it’s called these days)

Thanks - all the “enhancements” are turned off on my iTunes. So I’m wondering if I just have a bad sound card. But that doesn’t make sense because Cubase is playing through it. And it sounds good through Cubase.

Anyway - I did try it on another computer with Windows Media Player. And it not so compressed. So maybe my file is not working so well with iTunes?

Again - thanks for the suggestions!

It might not be your file then, but something to do with how you have your system audio set up.

Burn your track to a CD and play it on a Hifi or in your car

I haven’t listened to the file. However, in general such problems with MP3 as described can be due to gain issues. If so, this might help:

Windows only.

I listened to it with Windows Media Player with headphones and it sounded clear and not distorted, not muddled at all.
