Any ideas how I can improve the string stereo spread to really fill the stereo image with the available effects on the MoX6, yet still allow the piano and other instruments to have their own location. |

Here is an idea: Rather than recording the strings as a full section, visualize them spread across a stage. You could divide the strings into say...three sections, three tracks. Maybe low strings (contra, cello), mid strings (violas), and high strings (violins), and set the pan positions to 10 o’clock left, middle, and 2 o’clock right. This would allow your visualization to be realized aurally, and allow the other more prominent instruments to be “placed” in front and pan-adjusted to their relative physical positions. The point is, sometimes it works very well in stereo sound positioning to first visualize them on a stage, and then work to match the sound to the physical positions. That’s what your ears would do if you had the “best seat in the house”. |

It depends on what your goal is. If you’re trying to emulate an orchestral concert sound, then panning the instruments realistically is important. http://composerfocus.com/orchestral-panning-for-realism/ Otherwise, it’s up to you to decide placement and effects that suit your needs. It’s usually helpful not to use a lot of Insert Effects on individual instruments, especially if they involve differing reverb times and the like. Using System Effects to a greater degree tends to make the mix more cohesive. Besides placement in the sound stage, the frequency range of the instruments has to be considered so that instruments don’t bury others in the mix. |
