Hello everyone,
I have bought a new MOTIF XF 8 recently and i am having a little confusion regarding the midi recording.
I use nuendo 4 for recording in my home studio set up and i use a m-audio fast track pro external sound card for recording.
Now, i want to record audio signal generated by MOTIF XF using the midi data stored recorded in my pc i.e. in nuendo project file.
So my question is whether it is possible to do it without yamaha FW16E firewire card (I dont have it right now).
Currently i use a korg M50 keyboard where i send midi data to the synthesizer via company provided m50 plugin editor and record output of the keyborad using standard plugin cable which goes into the input of m audio sound card…
i.e.
(In DAW: midi input:all midi input
midi output: m50 plugin editor
In keyboard in: USB cable
keyborad out: analog cable going to m-audio fast track pro)

Is is possible here also???  looking forward for ur reply…

You should be able to record the output of the XF8 in exactly the same way - but you will be recording the output of all the tracks/parts from the MOTIF to one track in your DAW.  The FW16E card would allow you to SIMULTANEOUSLY record from multiple tracks/parts on the MOTIF to multiple tracks in your DAW.

I think…

That is fundamentally correct. If you download and install the Motif XF Stand alone/VST Editor, you will be able to setup and address your Motif XF as if it were a VST INSTRUMENT engine.

You would record your MIDI tracks in Cubase - output those MIDI tracks to the Motif XF Editor VST - the VST signal routing will send the MIDI data to the XF tone engine and receive the returning audio generated by the Motif XF tone engine and route it to the Nuendo AUDIO LANE setup for you Motif XF.

You would address the Motif XF as an external VSTi device.

in Nuendo:
Go to DEVICES > VST INSTRUMENTS > EXTERNAL > “Motif XF VST”

You will be asked if you want to create a MIDI track assigned to this external VST, and you do. You will create a MIDI Track for each PART you want to record. The MIDI data for each track will be assigned to this same VSTi MIDI IN, and each track will have a different MIDI channel 1 through 16. The audio for all the tracks will be returned through the Nuendo AUDIO LANE (found in the VST INSTRUMENT Folder created when you created the MIDI Track). Once this is assigned the VST EDITOR window will open.

In the Motif XF VST Editor go to > FILE > VSTi SETUP > route the main stereo RETURN to your AUDIO INTERFACE device “LEFT and RIGHT”

Connect the LEFT and RIGHT output via standard signal cables physically to two inputs on your audio interface.

That is it.

You will be able to use two inputs (1 stereo pair) because your audio interface has just two inputs for the Motif XF. The FW16E sends 16 audio buses between the XF and the computer - these can be configured as 8 stereo pairs of RETURNS from the XF to Nuendo via FireWire.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a ton… I am now able to record both midi and audio… I had to uninstall the drivers and again install. Accidentally I installed the FW driver too and that may be the root of the problem...thank you again…
