Hi there

I’m playing through the voices on my XF, having a lot of fun.
Then one particular voice interests me and i’m tweeking it a bit.
Sounds great now, and i want to sequence it making a song or a pattern, dosn’t matter… ( don’t care which track it records on )
But how can i as easy as possible get from Voice mode to either Song og Pattern mode, keeping the voice i like and have tweeked and simply start recording it to the sequencer ( midi notes )
(Just like recording directly from Performance mode )

Is such a function available

Help is needed, please :-)

Thanks in advance

Regards Chris

I would suggest that you ‘Save’ the Voice as a ‘User Voice’

So it’s not possible i guess :-)

I have to go find the voice again after changing to sequencer mode… is that the easiest way to do that ... hmnnn ?!?

not that simple after all

Thanks

Regards Chris

Go back and recreate the ‘Voice’. Once you are satisfied, pick a User Location to Store the Voice. Press STORE. The screen will ask for the location.Scroll to it. Press Enter and Confirm.

Now maybe you may not want to ‘keep’ that Voice. If you don’t, when you go to load up again, the Voice you overwrote will return.

Should you ‘want’ to keep that ‘Voice’,once you have Stored it to the User location, Save the entire file.
Hope this helps.

It would be nice if all the voices in the XS could be overwritten by the user.

The simple answer is: You cannot.

PERFORMANCE mode exists to do some things that you cannot do in VOICE mode. Yes, you can recreate that VOICE in PERFORMANCE mode - but I recommend you start your tweaking in PERFORMANCE mode… please read on:

In [VOICE] mode you can play an individual Motif XS sound. In order to understand the Motif XS - Voice mode contains the individual entries in the Motif XS sound Library - each is a “Voice”.

To really understand this: You have to view it as three separate MIDI products:

A keyboard controller
A synthesizer tone engine
A MIDI sequencer

That is a basic (oversimplification) of what is happening.

_ VOICE mode the keyboard is directed to play 1 sound, called a Voice.
_ In PERFORMANCE mode the keyboard is directed to play as many as 4 sound simultaneously. Performance mode does this by selecting a VOICE for each of the 4 PARTS of the Performance. They all sound simultaneously and (significantly) they are addressed on a single MIDI channel.
_ In SONG or PATTERN mode the keyboard is directed to play 1 sound at a time but this time the PARTS are laid out so they are next to each other 1-16. So your keyboard can trigger one at a time and you build up your composition one track at a time (in sequence, so to speak). Each Voice is placed in one of 16 PARTS - in this mode the tone generator is considered 16-PART multi-timbral

In order to record to the sequencer and playback data - properly, the PART is a very important component to understand. The PART allows you to have a discreet communication bus between the Keyboard > the PART > and the Seq. Track. This is necessary for MIDI sequencing and playback.

You cannot record to the sequencer from VOICE mode - you have not placed a VOICE in a PART. A PART, again, is necessary, it allows you to address a particular VOICE on a specific Track from the Sequencer and via a specific route from the Keyboard on a specific discreet MIDI channel. Since only 1 Voice is available in VOICE mode, multi-track recording is not possible (that would be illogical… all musical parts would play from one sound… makes no sense).

you need multiple PARTS - you need multiple TRACKS - you need multiple MIDI channels.

Long story short, if you want to record from VOICE mode, you can record yourself playing (as AUDIO) directly to a USB drive connected to the TO DEVICE port using the USB AUDIO RECORD/PLAY feature.

If you want to record MIDI data to the Motif XS sequencer you must do it either from PERFORMANCE mode using the direct PERFORMANCE RECORD feature (where you have “PARTS") or from SONG/PATTERN modes. Period.

The modes exist to accomplish different things. Once you understand this as the structure of the XS, it will make more sense.

A VOICE can be placed in a PERFORMANCE.
That is where (if you knew this before) you should have begun your tweaking of the VOICE… You should have started in a PERFORMANCE>

Press [PERFORMANCE]
Press [JOB]
Press [F1] INITIALIZE
Press [ENTER] to execute
This will start you with PRE 1:001(A01) Full Concert Grand - assigned to PART 1… basic starting point. Begin your tweaking here!!!

The concept of Direct Performance Record is to “jump start” the composing routine - by allowing you to pick a principal Voice that you will be playing directly… add a relevant Drum ARP - there are more than 1900 drum grooves to choose from - and they are arpeggios which means you can adjust the “feel and attitude” of the groove using the ARP PLAY FX (these are more inspiring than playing along with just a boring click/metronome), additionally a PERFORMANCE can also be set to add a realistic Rhythm Guitar part and/or basic Bass line to help outline the groove… With its more than 1300 and 1200 different Guitar and Bass ARP TYPES (respectively) - you can experiment with different ideas. Remember you don’t have to keep any of it. I often use just a basic Bass line arp - later I’ll replace that bass line with my own… the thing is I use the ARP just to get a better “feel” for the particular rhythm vibe of the Section I’m working on… Some times I keep it, most times I come up with something else all together. it’s nice to have some of these ideas to play around with…

Whether you use all four PARTS or not (it’s up to you), it is a great way to begin the process of composing a song… play with the basic idea in context of a rhythm section - that is what a PERFORMANCE is - a rhythm section used to inspire you put down the basic framework of the composition.

You would select “SONG” as the target for the Direct Performance Record when you just want to jam and figure out what you want to do. Songs will continue to record indefinitely…

You would select PATTERN as the target for the Direct Performance Record when you want to work a specific number of measures for a musical SECTION. Patterns will stop when it reaches the end of the CYCLE - you set the LENGTH prior to recording.

So in the future I would recommend you learn about PERFORMANCE mode as the stepping stone or gateway to MIDI sequencing in the XS.

Of course, you could start in SONG or PATTERN mode - in the typical one track at a time, sequencing scenario so familiar to many. I find that even if I only play a single sound (directly) and accompany it with a Drum ARP, it is very useful in, as I said “jump starting” the process of MIDI composing.

Hope that helps!
