This morning, I powered up my MOX8, and noticed that it took longer than usual to power up (just “MOX8” on the screen).  When it finally “came to”, everything was restored to factory presets (all my songs, performances, voices, etc. were gone).  Fortunately, most of the stuff is backed up (I lost a couple of days work on the current song… and may have lost my previous song, but it has already been recorded to audio… guess I won’t be remixing it...).

Anyway, does this mean my MOX is defective?  Is there any way to get my data back (without reloading my latest backup, which does not have absolute latest work on it)?  What would make this happen? (No, I didn’t go to “Utility” to restore presets… I just powered the MOX up)

Thanks

This is definitely something to check, from page 150 of the MOX Reference Manual:

Utility Job

In the Utility Job mode, you can restore this synthesizer’s User memory (page 23) to the factory default settings (Factory Set).  Please note that the setting of “Power On Auto” on this display will be stored automatically by executing Factory Set.

This comes in handy for retailers who need to easily reset machines that customers might mess up, not so much for a private user.

I don’t know if this setting somehow was changed, but you probably want to check it.

No, “Factory Set” box was not set.  In fact, I quickly did some scratch pad sequences for the song I was working on (so I wouldn’t forget it), and then cycled power, to see if it was going to happen again.  It didn’t.  My stuff was there.  So it seems to have happened only on the one power-on, so far.

A lesson:  BACKUP EVERY DAY!
