‘ello,

Picked up a MOX6 the other day and short story short 7 of the keys weren’t working and the place I ordered from isn’t going to take it back. Being somewhat electronics-inclined I figured I’d open it up and see if I couldn’t figure out the problem. I ended up finding a crack in the circuit board (YD179) underneath the non-working keys. After searching around the Yamaha site for awhile it doesn’t appear that I can order the board from them and replace it myself, so my question is: do I have to take this somewhere to get it fixed or is there a way I’m overlooking to get a replacement part.

Thanks

Attached is a picture of the offending crack.

This concerns a second hand board?
Otherwise it’s unwise to make any claim to the reseller:
now you opened it, they may blame you.

;JOOP!

I opened it after about a week of back and forth. I was hoping it would just be a loose ribbon cable or something of the sort, but I ended up finding that crack instead. At this point I just want the thing fixed more than assigning the blame to anyone. It would be nice if I could just find a replacement for the part that’s broken :s

We see you are in Michigan, call Yamaha Service on Monday 714-522-9011
Mon-Fri 8:30am-5:00pm Pacific Daylight Time.
They will be able to tell you definitively if you can order the part and/or how to proceed.

Hi there,
Would you please post more photos from the hardware? I’m mainly interested in the build quality of the keys. I want to know if there are mechanical or the connectors use a plastic pad?

Thank you so much. These pictures tell me everything I needed.

Identical to my psr 740! The plastic pads have limited lifetime specially if you play your keyboard very often.

Assuming you know who to repair the stuff you can search for “Mox6/8 service manual”. I think you should buy it from yamaha as the keyboard has been introduced recently and I couldn’t find it anywhere else for free. I guess It should be ~10-20 bucks.

They are not identical - the MOX6 has a newly developed action and is the first keyboard to use it. So sorry, you don’t know what you are talking about with this statement. The MOX8 has the Graded Hammer Standard action.

Hi Bad_Mister,
Thanks for you quote but the topic here is about MOX6 I don’t see any reasons to talk about MOX8 :)
With all respect I think my statement is very clear:

I’m talking about the “Rubber pad under the keys with carbon heads” in “MOX6” NOT “MOX8” as “whiskahs” asks about MOX6 in his question not MOX8.

In the pictures above you can clearly see the plastic/rubber pad. If you own a MOX6 and an old PSR keyboard you can compare them.

I’m not here to prove myself, those who know how this stuff works will get it immediately.

Plastic/rubber pads have two major drawbacks:

1-They tear apart.

2-The carbon heads will gradually get thinner and at the end they won’t be responsive at all, this is when you should replace the pad.

To me, this part of their newly developed action in “MOX6” (I mention it again MOX6) has the same drawbacks.

I can see rubber pads and for sure they will wear out as they transfer the touch signal to the board, this is an undeniable fact though.

There is no springs in MOX6/8 keybed . octaves plastic blocks like psr http://www.beckettsmusic.co.uk/shop/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=15843

compare http://allguitarrepair.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Yamaha-YPG625a3.jpg

That MOX6/8(MM6/8 and ALL GHS and PSR) does not have springs on keys, it has some bending plastics instead!!!

I was at best buy and I saw this:
PSR E233 @ $129.99

I took a close look at the keys, they looked very similar. Even the same feeling and touch. The identical noise while I played it a bit. I was wondering if the mox has the same keys as this one?!

‘The MOX8 has the Graded Hammer Standard action.’

Which also depends on bendy plastic and no springs. One key goes bad - you have to replace an octave. I know - it’s happened a few times now on my MOX8.
I have had it for a good year - playing a gig once or twice a week on it, and I’m getting ready for the third key replacement.
Not the sturdiest of actions - but I guess that’s one of the areas where corners had to be cut for price/weight reasons.
