Hi!

Can someone smarter than me tell me how to use a Yamaha DD-55 drum kit to control the MO8?  I have plugged MIDI out from the DD-55 in to the MIDI in of the MO8.  I’ve tried the instructions on page 210, but I must be missing a step.

I really want to make natural sounding rolls and stick bounces that ya just can’t get with the keyboard. I know you can likely program that in after the fact, but JEEZ!

Please help me, or tell me where in the manual that I should be looking.

Thanks, in advance,
Alan

On the MO set MIDI IN/OUT = MIDI
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F5] MIDI
Press [SF1] CH
The BASIC RECEIVE CHANNEL parameter here only refers to Voice and Performance modes (not Song or Pattern modes).
Press [SF4] OTHER
Set MIDI IN/OUT = MIDI

The DD-55 is a Yamaha Digital Percussion product. It can be used as a stand alone drum unit or used to control any external MIDI device. You must, of course, match the MIDI transmit Channel of the controller (DD55) with the MIDI receive Channel of the tone generator (MO8). Both can be configured - the key is: they must match.

When in VOICE Mode (or PERFORMANCE) the MO is addressed on a single MIDI channel (set in UTILITY mode).
When it is in one of the two sequencer modes (SONG/PATTERN) the MO is 16 PART multi-timbral and can receive data on each of the 16 MIDI channels. (MIDI channel is set within the MIXING program)… as follows:

When you are looking for the MO8 MIDI Receive Channel in a SONG MIXING or PATTERN MIXING setup:
press [MIXING]
Press [EDIT]
Select the PART by pressing a numbered button [1]-[16] to view PART Edit parameters
Press [F1] VOICE
Press [SF2] MODE
Here you will find the MIDI Receive Channel for each PART. By default PART 1 is Channel 1, PART 2 is Channel 2 and so on.

You need to get the DD55 Owner’s Manual (pages 27 and 28) will tell you how to set the unit’s pads to a MIDI Transmit Channel and how to set the Note Number each pad will be sending.

In the MO8 say you want to trigger a Drum Kit. If your drum kit is in a SONG or PATTERN determine in which PART 1-16 the Drum Kit is assigned. That will be the channel that you want to set the DD55 to transmit on

-- or --

You can change the Drum Kit in the MO to match the Transmit channel of the DD55

One or the other, but transmit and receive channels must match in order for your pad strikes to arrive and trigger the MO. You may also want to read about how to turn LOCAL CONTROL OFF in the DD55 as this will allow you to silence its own internal sounds when you strike a pad (and make it just a controller to trigger the MO8).

Each Drum in a MO Drum Kit is on a different NOTE NUMBER “C0” through “C6”. You can see these by calling up a KIT in VOICE mode > Press EDIT > touch numbered button [1] to view KEY parameters. Now any time you touch a KEY between C0 and C6, the information concerning the sound assigned to that Key will be recalled. (Yes you can create your own custom kits in the MO).

You can either change the Transmit Note Number of the PAD or you can build a custom drum kit to match the Note Numbers that the DD is set to transmit.

It is easier to program your controller’s Pad Number to match the KITS already programmed in the MO, but you have your choice.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You?

Are Awesome!

I have added this thread to my favorites in case I need it, later!

So where’s a good place to show off audio made with the Motif family?  After spending five or so years with the instrument, things are just starting to ‘click’, not just with the piano tecknique, but also in the construction of the backing parts using pattern, chaining that, and finalizing them in song mode.  Then I try to play proper real time piano, (still gettin’ there!), and guitar and electric bass and harmonica, too.  Cryin’ out for a banjo, tho.  Saxophone, too.

I know I can make those sounds with the Mo8, but it’s also about the process with those instruments, and the specific vibrations that are felt when playing the instruments.

I can never thank you enough!

A thing I’ve discovered: if yer hearing the drums laced with piano in Pattern Mode, it’s because Track 10 is still set to to Receive Channel 10.

I, of course, set Track 10 to Rec Ch 16, (got it back!).

If I could get lag free audio into the desktop, or even the laptop, this would be dangerous.  Got any straight dope on how I can make that happen, Flip?

It is easier to program your controller’s Pad Number to match the KITS already programmed in the MO, but you have your choice.

^that part^:  I find that I need to create custom drumkits which will respond to the default settings of the pads of the DD-55c, subsequently storing those kits as favorites for later recall.

The DD-55c, you see, only has the room for one custom kit.

The idea is to be able to call up a custom drumkit voice in pattern mixing mode and have the DD-55c be a conga/bongo set, say.

I’ve been looking in the bible, but it’s a total easter-egg hunt, in there.  Set me up with a page number, I can sho’ get it, from there, Mr.
