I sold my ES7 a couple years ago but had a few dozen songs and patterns (w7a,w8a & w7p,w8p) stored on SmartMedia cards. About that time I purchased a Mo8, then subsequently a Mo6. I forgot all about those files until recently. So I purchased a SmartMedia card reader, and was able to copy the files over to a USB stick. I tried playing the songs on my Mo6 and althought I got no errors, the songs sounded wierd. Then it dawned on me that the patches are not the same in ES and MO. So I need to find out what patches I used on the ES and choose the same or very similar MO patches and update my song and pattern files with those.

So how can I open those ES song and pattern files and see what patches were used? Any software? Or must I find someone with an ES and use their machine?

Thanks in advance.

You cannot open those files and view directly what VOICES was used in each PART (which is what you will need to do) short of having an ES. But what you can do without an ES is download the Data List booklet for the Motif ES.

I’m sure the file when it loaded into the MO6 recalled a specific location (wrong VOICE in that location) - but, at least you now know the original Voice’s location in the ES.

So say the File when load in the MO6 recalls PRE 2: 001(A01) “Hard Ens” a Brass Voice instead of the Organ sound you know that should be there. You only need look in the Motif ES’s Data List booklet (VOICE LIST) to find that the ES has the organ Voice: “Left Manual” in that location: PRE 2L001(A01).

Knowing that the correct locations are being referenced - you can quickly go through the Data List booklet and manually find the correct Voice. STORE each SONG and PATTERN once you’ve updated the MIXING setup. It only sounds tedious, once you get into a rhythm you will not be sorry you did it. It is way quicker than redoing all the tracks.

In many cases you will find the same name Voice (certain ‘favorites’ survive in the Motif/MO library simply because they are very popular)… The Drum Kits are (fortunately for you) very similar.

Of course, not all ES Voices appear in the MO6 but with the Data List booklet you will at least know what the original Voice was supposed to be… the Motif ES6/7/8 Data List Booklet is downloadable from the Yamaha Manual Library

Thank you so much Bad Mister. That will work fine for me. I didn’t realize that the locations were still true on the MO. Thanks again. Have a great day!

ES songs and patterns can be loaded into the MO, XS and XF but not the Motif Classic.

What you need to do is to create Mixing Voices for all the songs, that way the voices are stored with the song data rather than using pointers to voices in preset and user banks.

Check the ES manual for info on creating Mixing Voices.
