Hi Bad_Mister,
You told me to create new topic if you hasn’t answer within a week. So I’m writing new :) The question is: Is it possible to control Motif Rack XS with MIDI Controller such as AKAI MPK 61 just as real MOTIF XS can do with factory keyboard. I mean all functions on right panel such as arpeggio on/off, part mute, part select, arpeggio hold and of course slider functionality to control volume on each instrument. This can be done if four part layer is switched OFF, but in this case only one instrument can be played, because MIDI Keyboard send messages to one channel. Thank you! |

Thank you for the reminder. Here is what I found: You can control the Motif-Rack XS’s individual PARTS even when the “LAYER 1-4 PARTS” switch is set to ON (meaning the PARTS are set to the same basic receive channel) via MIDI if you can program System Exclusive messages from your controller. You will be able to control the following:
PART MUTE - by sending a Sysex message for PART “VOLUME”
PART MUTE: - this also can be used to control the individual VOLUME of each PART.
PART ARP SWITCH
PART ARP HOLD

You should check M-Audio Axio Pro keyboard controllers. I’m using the first version of this (Axiom25) and it has very good responsible keys and a lot of possibilities for control. New version go further with some automatic setting features to most DAWs. I’m not intend to be a M-Audio promoter (I’m not working for them), but for that money this controller should be respected. Thanks again!
What about MUTE issue? Controlling volume to mute is not an option, because you can’t do “unmute”.
Is there any way??? best regards! |

There is no official MUTE Control Change command in MIDI spec. The keyboard XS does this by defeating the PART’s audio connection to the output.
I don’t know your particular keyboard controller - but if you can send cc011 value of 0 - this will act as a mute.
This is not a perfect solution (the only perfect solution is get the keyboard Motif XS/XF) but you can tell certain PARTS to ignore Expression… while others can be set to receive it. It is all or nothing. Within the MULTI you can set the RECEIVE SWITCH parameter for each PART, customizing what controllers it will receive or ignore. Controller 11 is relative Volume (Expression)… Controller 7 is absolute Volume (main Channel Volume). So if the PARTs Volume is set to say, “96” - that means controller 7 is 96. It also means that Controller 11’s maximum (127) will equal 96 and work down from that point and never exceed the main channel volume. You will not be able to individual MUTE control but if you need to bring in and out a PART, this may work for you… otherwise I’m not sure there is a solution (other than the integrated interface of the Motif XS/XF keyboard). |

Peace, I am not looking for those types of things I am having an issue with just triggering the MOtif XS rack midi with my MPK 88 midi controller, could you help me out?
it will not trigger my Motif XS rack. Now my M Audio 25 will trigger, so it’s not the Motif it’s the MPK. I have the midi going out of the MPK into the Motif midi and it should just trigger when I hit the keys. Is there something I am missing with the MPK? Please let me know.

Sorry, I don’t know the MPK 88 - did you contact the company who makes it? Is that AKAI? |

So you mean to tell me the MPK 88 by midi can’t trigger the sounds in the Motif? And that’s all I want is when I hit a key on the MPK the sound will trigger/play in the Motif. If I can’t trigger the sounds in the Motif the MPK is WACK! |

I don’t mean to tell you anything. I simply do not how to work the AKAI Controller ... there is nothing extraordinary that needs to be done on the Rack XS side. If you are connected to the Motif-Rack XS directly via a MIDI cable, you only need to set the MIDI IN/OUT = MIDI If you do not know how to set your controller to send MIDI that is what you need to find out. If your keyboard is set to use USB then you must connect to a computer to re-route the signal to wherever you want it to go. If you have your Rack XS connected to a computer via USB, then you need to set the MIDI IN/OUT = USB. |
