Hi

On the Rack ES I think there used be two options - one to set the MIDI recieve channel for voice mode, and one to set the recieve channel for programme changes in Multi (which I had set to 16)

I can’t seem to get the XS to respond on channel 16 to the patch changes I’m sending fo selecting the Multi. If I change my sending channel to 1 it works, but I want to avoid editing over 400 patches on my live setup to all change to channel 1

Just wondered if I’m missing something!?

Thanks, Pete

hi cheezee.

I was about to post a very similar (almost the exact same) question.  When I am on midi channel 1 and send the program change it works with no problem.  (it’s changing the program/patch number of the entire multi.

But if I switch to any other channel (including 16) it simply changes to program/patch number for that specific channel.

Sorry, the question(s) are not clear. What is it you want to do?

If you want to change the entire MULTI say from MULTI 001 to MULTI 002, you would send it a BANK SELECT and PROGRAM CHANGE event on the BASIC RECEIVE CHANNEL.

Here is the information you need to know:
You can set the BASIC RECEIVE CHANNEL for the entire Motif-Rack XS as follows:
Press [VOICE] to enter VOICE mode
Press [UTILITY]
Select “VOICE MIDI” > press [ENTER]
Set RECEIVE CH = a value between 1 and 16
Press [STORE] to lock in your selection

Press [MULTI] to return to MULTI mode
If you send the Bank Select and Program Change on the selected MIDI channel it will change the MULTI.

MSB = 063
LSB = 068
PC = 001

This information will change the MULTI to MULTI 002
Remember:
MULTI 001 = PC 000
MULTI 002 = PC 001
MULTI 003 = PC 002 and so on.

Program Change numbers start at 000-127, while MULTIS are numbered 001-128.

The MSB/LSB value 063/068 will address the entire MULTI, not the individual sound assigned to a PART.

Individual sounds use banks selects as follows:
063/000 = Preset 1
063/001 = Preset 2
063/002 = Preset 3
063/003 = Preset 4
063/004 = Preset 5
063/005 = Preset 6
063/006 = Preset 7
063/007 = Preset 8
063/008 = User 1
063/009 = User 2
063/010 = User 3
000/000 = GM normal
127/000 = GM drum
063/032 = Preset Drum
063/040 = User Drum
063/060 = Mixing Voice * only available in Multi mode

You must send the Bank Select and Program Change messages on the MIDI channel of the PART.

So say you set the Motif-Rack XS [UTILITY] mode RECEIVE CHANNEL equals 1. Sending the following messages on MIDI CHANNEL 1 will have the following results.

063/068 with PC = 127 will select MULTI 128
While sending a Bank Select and Program Change message on Channel 1 of 063/000 with PC = 000 will select the “Full Concert Grand” for PART 1. The messages will not be confused - the Rack XS “knows” 063/068 means select a new MULTI. Any other Bank Select message is addressing the PART within the MULTI.

You must have updated your Motif-Rack XS for Bank Select for MULTIS to work. Lastest version is 1.03.xx

To verify your Rack XS version:
Press [EDIT]+[UTILITY] to view the DEMO SONG screen
Press and Hold the [AUDITION] button for 3 seconds to display version number.

I figured it out… finally (i had the receive channel wrong).

so now… what if I WANT to change the individual sounds inside of the multi?

I’m also trying to figure out how to keep from going through each and every one of the multis and removing the drums from it.  I don’t want to have to mute midi channel 1 each and every time i choose a different multi… I also would love to make the arps function OFF by default.
