Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows how to import a style into the mm6. I called Yamaha and they said that all you do is save it to a usb and then put it into the mm6 and whala it should be there and you just choose it. Well, I tried that and nothing shows up. All I ever see are the songs I made into smf’s or the performance banks I have saved. I could really use step by step instructions. Because I’m at a loss. Thanks so much. Maria |

Where did you get the style you want to import ? Style data has a very specific format and so we need to know exactly what data you are trying to import to give exact instructions on how to load it. |

I was trying to import a Band in a Box style because both the yamaha representative and the BIAB person said it was possible as long as it had an .styl extension. Hope that helps because I would like to import a pattern in 3/4 as there are no 3/4 patterns in the mm6. Thanks Maria |

Athan, Let me see if I can help Maria with this. Maria, I think the PG Music (Band-In-A-Box) folks and the Yamaha rep you were talking to were confusing the MM6/8 with the MO6/8. The pattern files on the MO6/8 are totally different from the pattern files on the MM6/8. Pattern files on the MO6/8 are midi remix loops that can be chained together in the workstation’s sequencer to form songs. Pattern files on the MM6/8 are very similar to the style files on the PSR Arranger Workstations. Many of us use Band-In-A-Box as a source for remix loops for the MO6/8 (as well as the XS), but these are just standard midi files. The MM6/8 can import the style (.sty) files from the PSR Arranger Workstations into pattern slot 169, but they can not use style (.sty) files from Band-In-A-Box. The BIAB files are not the correct format and generate an error message on the MM6/8. You can find PSR style files to download at arrangerworkstation.com or psrtutorial.com. Only files with an extension of .sty will work. Files with an extension of .prs will not work. All of these files are optimized for a particular arranger (PSR-1500,PSR-3000, Tyros, etc.), so the voicings may or may not work well on the MM6/8. Most of voicings I have had problems with are with some of the drum kits (cowbell instead of rimshot, etc.). Since the MM6/8 does not provide for editing patterns (styles), you would need a separate software package to correct this. A company named EMC markets that. Also, the MM6/8 will ignore any intros or endings in the style files as they are not supported on the MM6/8. If you are willing to spend some time downloading PSR style files and trying them out, it can be quite rewarding, even though you can only load one at a time. Since you never know what will work and what will not until you try them on the MM6/8, I recommend sticking with the freebie style files. Hope this helps. Regards ! Ted |

Hi Maria ! Sounds like you already had this thing pretty well figured out by the time I got back to you. Was glad the Yamaha folks got back to you. That tells me there are some folks out there that still care about customer satisfaction. Something to keep in mind about going for a synth that allows loop recording and chaining (MO6/8, XS6/7/8, etc). If you sell or trade in your MM6/8, you will be losing the arranger function that allows the accompaniment to follow your left hand chords. If that is important to you, you may want to keep the MM6/8. Quite often, I want the accompaniment to follow me at the pace I set, rather than going at a dead run to keep up with a midi file or audio backing track. These things are free running and unlike a live band, won’t try to resynch with you if you make a mistake. I usually end up having to stop the sequencer and restart somewhere near where I made the mistake. For that reason, I have always tried to keep a full blown synth and an arranger on hand. Hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of your Mini-MO. Regards ! Ted |

Thanks Ted. I just read your reply (been so busy playing my mini mo that I haven’t remembered to check this forum in a long time. I decided to keep the mini mo cause I really do love so much about it. Including what you spoke about with the arranger acomp. I love the fact to that you can put the chords across the keyboard instead of using the “multi” function. ANd I love how light weight it is. I actually got the nerve up and used it a my regular restaurant gig. normally just play acoustic guitar and sing. But since Dec when I got my mm6 I have been writing songs on it so I figured what the heck. It went really well and everyone loved it. I just wish I had more time to work on my skills. Well take care and thanks again

Hi Maria Glad to hear that you are enjoying your MM6. Playing in the restaurant atmosphere sounds like a lot of fun. Page 71 of the MM6 manual has the step-by-step instructions for loading a pattern (style) from a USB flash drive, but there are a few limitations that you need to be aware of: The pattern (style) file to be loaded must be the type with a .sty extension designed for a Yamaha PSR Arranger Workstation and must be loaded into the root directory of the flash drive. If you put it into a sub-folder on the flash drive, the MM6 will not be able to find it. There are also style files with a .prs extension, but the MM6 will not see them. You can rename the extension to .sty and the MM6 will see and load them, but it has been my experience that, while most of the .sty files work OK as is, many of the .prs files have one or more tracks that the MM6 can not see, usually drums and/or bass. You can always rename and load them and give them a try. If there are any USER (song/perf) files on the same flash drive as your .sty files, the MM6 display may not show the .sty files when you first go into the LOAD menu. Just use the data wheel or INC/DEC buttons to scroll thru the file names until you see your .sty files. Most of my .sty files require 20 to 30 seconds to load, so this must be taken into account. It may not seem like much, but can seem like an eternity for both you and your audience during a live performance. Once the pattern (style) file is loaded, exit from the LOAD function and follow the standard instructions for selecting a pattern and select pattern number 169. Even though the MM6 will recognize up to 4 rhythm variations and fills in a style, it will not recognize or play any intros or endings, so you are on your own for coming up with these. For a fill without a variation change, just press the button for the currently playing variation.
Unless the pattern has been modified (tweaked) for a specific model of keyboard, it will most likely just use the GM voice set of the MM6 and should sound OK. If it has been modified, it may not sound correct. In order to correct this, or to have the
Patterns should be for the PSR-3000 or earlier arrangers. Patterns (styles) designed specifically for the original Tyros PROBABLY will not work. Styles designed specifically for the Tyros 2 MOST LIKELY will not work. Styles designed specifically for the Tyros 3 DEFINITELY will not work. Good luck and keep enjoying the MM6 Regards ! Ted |
