From what I’ve read about mLAN, it seems like one of the best “failed” tech endeavors since Betamax. I’ve been wondering about what sort of things might be possible with mLAN that can’t be done using the YSFW driver, for the fun of it if nothing else.

For example: if I were to have two Motif XFs and connect them together via IEE1394 while ensuring that they operate in mLAN mode rather than “FW mode”, could the two Motifs exchange audio digitally without involving a computer in between?

Would an earlier model Motif be better for exploring the unique character of mLAN? I know that it was essentially entirely phased out by the time the XF came around, with the XS witnessing the death knell as-it-happened, but I don’t know if its mLAN capabilities were any different from the ES (or XS).

How about connecting one Motif to two PCs simultaneously? Two Motifs to one PC?

Does anyone around here have any first-hand experience with using mLAN as originally envisioned: going beyond a single computer connected to a single mLAN device?

Interconnecting mLAN devices definitely has/had advantages. I’ve never used devices supporting mLAN myself, but you might find the following interesting:

Information concerning IEC 61883-6 might also provide further insight - I suggest investigating that protocol.

Hopefully members with direct mLAN experience will post.

Thanks for the links!

I got a response from Bad Mister over at YamahaSynth detailing the history of mLAN. It doesn’t answer any of the hypothetical scenarios I have involving multiple Motifs or multiple PCs, but there is some interesting stuff in there. I hadn’t realized that the XF actually dropped support for mLAN entirely and only supports the YSFW driver.

It’s an extremely niche use-case to be sure, but who would have thought that the XS actually has a capability that the XF doesn’t?

Blue-sky spitballing here, but IEC 61883-6 seems like a promising candidate for the sort of digital modular system I’d love to see realized. I hope the future holds a renaissance for the concept of a digital audio network!

Greetings
That’s some interesting stuff!

off topic, a little,
I should have bought a Korg Kronos in 2011 instead of the XF’s!
They may not be the more successful company comparatively speaking, but I’m starting to believe they’re the more consistent and sane.
As in one of my other posts I have a brand new Kronos2 88 in front of me, I can only imagine from reading it’s history from it’s beginnings, what in Hell is Yamaha thinking? (last short sentence applies to Hackintosh as well)

Have a nice day… :)

Yes. By the time the XF was designed it seems Yamaha realized there wasn’t much support for mLAN elsewhere. The XS requires the mLAN16E2 interface, which was standard in the XS8 and optional for the XS6/7. If an XS6 or XS7 owner wants to use FW but doesn’t have that interface, the FW16E can be used (when one can be found), but only with the YSFW driver. Also, the mLAN16E2 firmware can be updated so that it can be used in an XF with the YSFW driver, but of course without mLAN capability.

Time will tell, but I’m not holding my breath.
