OK, so after switching to the ALI i see a little progress:
The WDM-Drivers installed after switching on the XS.
I still cannot send Audio to the XS, but it seems we’re getting somewhere.
the VIA Interface seem to be not too nice with the FW16E.
I’ll try to get the audio running. |

wow, i cannot even get cubase to route the midi from the input-track to the VST
this is NOT a cubase problem: the moment i switch to another asio-driver (e.g. roland sonic cell) the MIDI data gets through.
i think the ALI is a bit better than the VIA, but probably i’ll try to get a TI, this seems to positiveley work. really VERY strange.
i’ll keep you informed.

Although what you’re experiencing might be related to the FW chipset, my own experience is that it’s not always the problem. I’m using the IEEE-1394/FW port on a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 card, not necessarily known for the best FW implementation, without problem. (Windows reports the vendor for the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller as “1102”, which is Creative.) No glitches, etc. Rather than using Cubase as a means of determining functionality, you might try something simpler. Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org/) works quite well for this purpose (and many others, by the way). You should be able to set its “Input Device” to “Yamaha Steinberg FW WDM Audio”, play an XS demo Song and record it in Audacity. If you also set Audacity’s “Output Device” to “Yamaha Steinberg FW WDM Audio”, the recording should play back via the XS. You can use the Audacity “Normalize” Effect to bring the level of the recording up if it’s low. If that works, it verifies Audio operation of the FW16E. (I just did so without a problem.) Best of luck. |

good idea, i’ll try to check in audacity (got it installed anyway).
i am not too confident that this will work though, because i cannot even get any midi-information to or from the standalone XS Editor, (syncing and switching works, as in the VST_version) but who knows… hope that the fw-card with a TI-chipset will arrive on friday, so i can give that a try. |

rehi!
partly solved!
a total gamechanger was: checking the driver for the ALI FW card!
i am still struggeling with the indiviual returns, but i think i’ll get that one figured out myself. nvertheless, i’ll try the TI adapter, when it’s here…

one more update: i cannot get the routing from the individual mlan ports-via VST to the main mlan-port done. signalflow should be like this
midi-track ->
this should work in ‘With PC’ Mode, midi set to Rec on PC midi seems to reach the XS, as i can hear the correct sounds, but i do not get anything in the audiolane:( possibly another fw issue…

one more thing: the output seems to be switched:
why do i get signal on the phones, but not on the cubase-audiolane, when i choose anything different?

The headphones only receive the signal from the Main L&R;outs. To hear any audio from the computer, it’s output must also be routed to Main L&R;if that’s what your speakers are connected to. |

Rehi, during the easter-weekend i finally managed to test the TI-Firewirewirde card.
Technically it seems to work, there are no errormessages or exclamation marks. But the card delivers dropouts from time to time (more than one per minute, but very irregular) when used in cubase.
What i already found out before was theat the motif-exentensions for cubase do totally mess up C9, so do NOT INSTALL THEM. Yamaha/Steinberg really should work on that. First, the extensions do not work too well with the new layout, but more important, they keep the single-out signals from reaching the Audiolanes for the Motif-Plugin! So my solution, which seems to work for the time being: ALI firewire Card, legacy Drivers, _NO_ Motif Extensions.

I have no personal experience with Cubase 9. However, see http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/478701/

rehi,
yes, the YSFW-tool. totally forgot about that.
as for the extensions: one might think they do work, as long as you don’t use the individual outs (but that was a main point for me to get FW). and the user there uses an XF, not an XS. as the only advantage of the extensions seem to be the templates, that’s not really important for me. the audio-setup is pretty straightforward, and i don’t want to have unneeded i/o configured. if i get the dropout issue solved with the YSFW, i’ll report here…

...aaaand once more: put the TI card back in: the dropouts reappeared in cubase.
started the YSFW-Tool and set the buffersize to medium.
i think i heared just one droupout since. but could not reproduce it.
the latency did not rise significantly by raising the buffersize.
YAY! Everything works now. Thanksalot for the help!
