If all you’re connecting to the Montage’s port is a single flash drive, current draw shouldn’t be an issue. For USB 2.0, typical unit load for a low power device (such as a flash drive) is 100 mA or less, although SuperSpeed devices can draw 150 mA. The maximum current is usually drawn during write operations, with idle/read being significantly less.
Montage’s 500 mA limitation is USB spec for maximum current draw on a 2.0 port. Although I haven’t seen the Montage design, typically there’s current limiting. Previous discussion concerning the XF’s TO DEVICE port:

Was not all that concerned actually, but new users should pay attention to the compatible USB list for another reason. There have been a couple of folks who had problems upgrading the OS image with non compatible devices. Once they procured a listed USB drive, they had no problem upgrading the OS from the listed device. That’s not to say that non listed devices might work for upgrading the OS image. I should have explicitly stated that powering devices “other than” a USB drive might have an inherent problem, like a USB powered sound module or other device with excessive current draw. |
