First post.

I’ve just acquired a motif xf6 and am having a few teething problems with the work flow in pattern mode. 
I’m coming from using a MPC 2500 for sequencing so there are a few paradigm changes to get used to but it seems pretty similar to the pattern mode sequencer on the motif.

One of the things that attracted me to the motif xf was the category search button. I thought it would be great for auditioning different instruments when sequencing tracks. While it worked well for trying different sounds on the showroom floor (voice mode), I can’t seem to access this from within the pattern sequencer mode, which is where I’ll spend the bulk of my time. 

The only way I’ve worked out how to setup voices in pattern mode is to hit the record button and select the bank and instrument numbers. This means that you have to have the manual on my lap, opened to the patch listings page in order to know what the cryptic bank and voice number is for each instrument.. on a keyboard with a giant LCD screen and a big button labeled category search!

What am I missing here?

From page 13 of the XF Owner’s Manual:

[CATEGORY SEARCH] button

...On the [F1] Track View display in the Song Play mode, [F1]
Play display in the Pattern Play mode, and [F1] 1 – 16
display in the Mixing Play mode, this function can be used
for assigning a desired Voice to each Part.

That should get you there.
