Can anyone describe how to make or a link to the GONG sound from beginning of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” without having to sample it.

It used FM synthesys from Synclavier. Unfortunately the XF does not have FM synth.

Due to limitations of available Waveforms in the XF, it’s somewhat of a challenge to create that sound without additional samples. Due to limitations of my time and patience, the “Gong??” Voice I created might be better.  :-)

The attached file is zipped. Once uncompressed, it’s an X0V “all voice”, compatible with either an XS or XF. The Voice is in User1 A01. All other locations are Initialized. If anyone wants to try the Voice, I’d suggest loading it using Type “voice” (not “all voice"), and choose a User location you don’t care about.

Feel free to use as is, mangle if desired, or ignore it altogether.  ;-)

Thanks a lot!

You’re welcome. If it’s not quite what you need, and you improve it, you might post your version so other members could benefit.

BTW the “Beat It” gong can be found in the Korg Kronos preset bank (Int-B 127) - and it even has the drum beat:

You can ask someone to sample it from their Kronos.

Alternatively you can sample the gong from the original demo LP by New England Digital, “The Incredible Sounds of Synclavier II”:

This exact phrase was replicated note-for-note on the MJ record.

In this library you can find the famous Synclavier Beat It voice. It’s more old sampler synthesiters can be found voice. (Fairlight CMI IIx, and E-MU Emulator II, IEmulator III, Emax 1, Emax 2)
There is a private collection.  My favorite voices library.
Look through the My Favorite library! You will find the voice sample you’re looking for.
