Hello, is anyone here that got the Motif Editor to work with Studio One 3? The problem for me is that i can’t get the Motif Editor to get “online” status, I’m trying to connect with USB, I don’t know how to get all the MIDI ports to open. Anyone have this problem? I really appreicate all the help! Thanks.

I know nothing about Studio One 3. However, let’s see if some basic things are correct before concerning ourselves with that.

1) Verify that the XF is set for USB operation. See page 228 of the XF Reference Manual, (4) MIDI In/Out, for details.

2) Make sure that you’ve downloaded and installed the correct USB-MIDI Driver for your computer type and operating system, available from http://download.yamaha.com/search/product/?site=usa.yamaha.com&category_id1=16277&product_id=1073315
(Your member profile doesn’t indicate anything about your computer or OS. Providing that information helps us to help you.)

3) Especially if the USB-MIDI driver wasn’t previously installed, try to set up the ports in Studio One. Primary MIDI In and Out (Port 1) are MOTIF XFx-1, where x = 6,7, or 8.

4) If the above doesn’t help, have you tried running the Editor standalone?

I do, and it works perfectly.

In Studio One you must create two new instruments.

Instrument 1 = Keyboard
Yamaha Motif XF KB
Receive from Motif XF-1, Send to NONE

Instrument 2 = Instrument
Yamaha Motif XF Synth
Receive from Motif XF-1, Send to Motif XF-4
(An info message regarding shared ports will come - ignore it)
Check “MIDI clock send” and “MIDI clock start send”

In Studio One you create a song, add instrument
and choose input Motif XF KB and MIDI out Motif XF Synth.
Probably you will also need an audio track which receives
the actual audio signals.
(Depending on how you connected the Motif XF)

And turn off Local on.

P.S. If you have problems with the ports, use Motif XF-4, not Motif XF-1 (I’m not at home and cannot check the exact setting)

But i still have the problem with Motif Editor at Port 1 it still says “Not Assigned” When i go into the Motif Editor in standalone i can see that all the ports are assigned but i can still not go Online… I mean… If you got it to work it must be possible for me to get it working?

Let’s take this a bit at a time.
Details can be important. Which OS?
Which USB-MIDI driver did you install?

I run the XF Editor standalone without problem. I’m doing it under XP SP3. Let’s see if we can at least get yours running standalone as well.

I have the Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit and i have never updated the OS for the motif. I have the “USB-MIDI Driver V3.1.4 for Win 64-bit (Win7 SP1 / Win8 / Win8.1 / Win10)” installed.

It says “Firmware Version Error” when i try to press Start inside the standalone motif editor.

You need to update the OS of your XF.

XF OS Version 1.50 download:
https://usa.yamaha.com/support/updates/61410_en.html

Be sure to follow the directions that come with the OS update.
Make a backup “All” file before installing the new OS.

File with 32 new Voices and 8 Performances that use new effects in OS V1.50:
https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/2/312762/NewVoiceV1.5.zip

MOTIF XF6/7/8 Supplementary Manual:
https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/325614/motifxf_v150_en_nf_c0.pdf
This manual covers new features from OS updates. The information is not covered in the XF Owner’s or Reference manuals.

It is correct that Port 1 is not assigned in the editor.
Important is that on Port 4 both connections are ok.
In your screenshot they are yellow but since you said
you managed it now, it should work.

Important is that you use the Motif XF keyboard (or any MIDI controller)
as controller.
Then you choose send to Motif XF Synth (the device you created in Studio One).

If you don’t get it to work, I can send you a screenshot of my settings
this evening.
(Right now I’m not at home.)
Then it should be working 100% for you as well.

Hello,

Attached you can see my settings.
Even though it will be clear for you:

1 = Device list
2 = Setting of my KB - this is the device needed for any inputs
3 = The real instrument which will receive the signals
4 = The minimum amount of required tracks to use the XF in Studio One
5 = The VST editor settings

Of course you can also use the Song or Pattern mode in order to have 16 Midi channels.

Best regards

You’re welcome :)

Yes, you can change them in the Editor.
Normally every change/setting, which is done in the Editor,
is automatically also done on the Motif XF.
And when you do something on the Motif XF (e.g. using a fader or a knob),
it will apply this automatically on the Editor.
(So both are 100% linked/synced.)

Keep attention that the Editor is always online.
Normally it is always online, but when closing the Song
window and creating a new one, it will be offline.

Sometimes, when creating a new song,
Studio One sends a message like “Motif VST editor used by Motif XF...”
(Can also happen when you turn off the XF and turn it on again.)
In such a case I just restart Studio One, then it works.

Last attention point:
When exporting a song (after you recorded some MIDI/WAV),
it might be necessary that you turn off the Editor.
(You can leave it online, just click on the symbol marked in the screenshot).
Otherwise Studio One will make “real-time processing”, even though the WAV files were recorded.

Best regards
