I’ll just say that there is obviously something incorrect going on with
The reason I said there might be something wrong with your particular XF,
Saying someone might have hearing loss is not an accusation - it is a statistical fact that most adults over 35 exhibit some type of hearing loss, and this only increases as people age. Many older audio professionals know they have hearing loss, but learn to work around it
I once did a mix for a heavy metal band and the mix was quite bright
Right there I knew what the problem was - the guitarist had severe hearing
This is why I bring up the subject of hearing loss in replies from time to

Perhaps even worse than perceptive loss over a range of frequencies is “hearing” sound that isn’t really there. See:

I suggest you (re)read the entire thread—the noise problem with panning driven by the Common LFO as reported by keyrunner has been verified. It apparently not only exists on the XF, but also on the XS. |

What do you think, can this be fixed by a software update or is this a hardware only problem? Can Yamaha find a workaround (exept not using the common LFO anymore)? (Just in case that anyone makes the same mistake (like macalister did) again and thinks we are too picky or half deaf: Here’s the MP3 that keyrunner posted on page one. To me this shows a major flaw in our (apart from that great sounding) Motif: STE-001.mp3 - For “best” results use your headphones...) |

I mentioned that ages ago. The common LFO sounds really bad with deep or fast modulations, and it’s a pity since it is the only LFO that can have different waveforms. It’s not the only fault of the XS engine, also the portamento exhibit this zipper noise, and the modulations done with the mod wheel & pitchbend too. But there are worse performers. When I had the M3 I couldn’t stop hearing zipper noises all the time, until I found that it was the envelopes. I did some tests and posted them here: http://www.karma-lab.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11042 In contrast, the XS and ES envelopes are smooth. The best synth I’ve come across in this matter is the Modular G2, which has all the modulations done at 22khz (every 4 samples at 96khz), which is out of the hearing range, so you can never hear any zipper noise. |

The stereo panning artifacts are quite horrible indeed. Maybe a good stereo panning needs a faster CPU, like 2-3 GHz or a analog synth. Maybe the stereo panning could be done in Cubase 6 instead, since there you have a 2-3 GHz CPU at work, if your PC has one. I’ve also thought of 3D music, where I record each track as mono, and then move them with a 3D game engine in 3D space. Headphones can simulate 3D sound quite nicely with OpenAL. |

@dorremifasol: Very good answer, interesting facts, thank you! Now I know why I did not buy an M3. I think the Triton had a better sound engine. On my Fantom X I never heard any zipper noise except for extensive use of glide and when using fast MIDI CC Modulations (Bender, Aftertouch, D-Beam...). But I never really “searched” for it. Seems still to be some kind of a common problem even on today’s workstations. @Lumooja: You don’t need a 2GHz CPU to perform some 22kHz (unhearable) modulation resolution. See Modular G2 example above your post. |

I’m no techie, but I was having some weird high whistling noises in one of my organ performances. It only happened in a range of a few keys. I couldn’t figure it out and was getting a little worried, but then I notice the resonance knob setting was at around 2:00. I dropped it down a bit and the problem disappeared. Might wanna check that. |

Hi I have a similar issue that I just wanted you to know about. I believe this is related to calculation errors but I don’t know. Check out the the second page for a description, recipe and a demo file of my artefacts. //Anders |
