Dear Friends,

I am planning to buy a Yamaha MX61 as a secondary keyboard to use on the stage, on top of my Roland digital piano (which is my main instrument anyway)

I was using a Tyros as the second instrument to take solos with organ and synth sounds.
It got damaged and I want to buy a lightweight, inexpensive synth, to use for the same purpose.

On Tyros it took a few clicks to change the voice (ex. from Organ to Synth) during a solo.
The registration buttons mainly did the magic here.

Is it easy to change from one voice to another on MX61, like it is in Tyros?
Or do I have to stop playing an scroll through menus to find the voice.

Please help me, because I have to decide and buy something as soon as possible.

Best regards
Anil

Welcome to the forum.

The MX models are limited in some respects. For example, they don’t have a separate Voice mode - Voices are selected via the Performance mode. If you intend to do any extensive editing, it will require software running on a computer. An MX might not be as convenient as you would like. Perhaps the following will help you decide…

See http://www.motifator.com/index.php/support/view/getting_started_with_the_yamaha_mx49_and_mx61

http://download.yamaha.com/file/57917
See page 18.

See page 40.

Although not as inexpensive, a MOXF (or perhaps a used MOX) might be a better choice for your needs.

Thank you very much 5pinDIN,

I have indeed changed my mind towards buying a MOXF6.

But, I still have the same question.
Is it easy to change from one voice to another (like Organ to Flute) during a solo like we do on a Tyros ?

Thank you in advance

Best regards
Anil

You’re welcome.

I think this will satisfy your requirements:

Have in mind that MX performances are the equivalent of MOX or MOXF mixes (except that there is no onboard sequencer to record and that there are only 4 single insertion effects in MX instead of 8 dual in MOXF). The polyphony is the same and the feature of no-cutting voices when changing them within a performance is also available. Also, you will be surprised by the similarity of MX and MOXF internal single voices. Of course, MOXF can load new waveforms in optional memory board. Visit a local dealer and listen to both instruments. If you can afford the extra money for the extra features (and extra weight) go for the MOXF.

Thank you very much Kostas,

I have already decided for MOXF6, since my dealer gave me a very nice discount.

I am just a bit anxious about assigning my favorite voices to tracks (’registrations’ was the word in Tyros terminology)’ so that I can switch from ex. rock organ to saw lead with the click of a button during a solo.

As far as I understood, I can do this by creating a pattern (or song) and assigning the voices to different tracks, as if I were recording a whole song.

I will see tomorrow, when I get this marvelous keyboard.
Thanks again.

It’s really quite straightforward, especially since you don’t have to record any MIDI data on the tracks. Once the Parts are assigned, just STORE the Pattern/Song mix, and then when you call it up you’ll be able to easily move between up to 16 different Voice Parts (per Pattern/Song).

I own lot’s of Yamaha gear. I have a Motif XS6, original Motif 7, PSR 3000, MOX8 and recently purchased the MX61. I purchased the MX 61 for gigs that required a long pathway to setup. Like Casinos, Hotels and Corporate gigs. Being a piano player it is a bit of a problem with the action, but I have to say it is one of the best purchases I have made. Price, sound and weight are the real features. I love my MX61. Grab a light stand, small amp and the MX61 in a gig bag and your good to go.

On another note however, I sent in to get the free flash drive and gig bag (MX promotional) and it has been a long time and still nothing.
Yamaha’s customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Also, being the loyal Yamaha product fan that I am, I have sent many emails to the keyboard product rep in Nashville, with testimonials about their products and how I, really not only enjoy using them but, I gave them credit on my last album. I also pointed out that I always tell everyone about Yamaha musical products. Well, Not a response, not a thank you or even a KMA.
I am very disappointed in the Morons running the company!!!!!!

I love just how lightweight the MOX and MOXF are so the MX61 must be a breeze for difficult venues.

You CAN configure the performances to make quick changes from instrument1 to instrument2 - one button push with no limit on the instrument type you are changing to/from.
Editing some of the parameters of the standard voices to create a range of custom ones is possible from the front panel, but easier with John Melas MX Tools software.  For example I have a common voice I use but I want to have different version with the “Leslie effect” at different speeds. If you create them at the same time they will be in numerical order - e.g. U (user)001, U002, U003 etc.  This is not well covered in the documentation in my view.

Hey Guys,
I just now signed up on this forum in hopes that you’re still watching this post and might give me an hand with an MX-61 question or two…

I too am considering buying an MX-61 IF I can edit some factory-applied effects. For example, the Leslie/rotary effect on an organ voice I like is “too intense,” you might say. I’d like to turn it off (no spin) and on (ramp up) with a momentary off/on foot switch. Likewise, I’d like to reduce the amount of vibrato on a flute voice.

Are either or both of these possible...? If so, is it something you can do with Cubase or other third-party editor? I’ve got both Win XP and Win7 PCs, if you can recommend one.

Really appreciate any how-to advice, as well – thanks!

Hi there,
i have/had the same issue.  You can easily edit the parameters for leslie effects. I edited a voice for say different Leslie speed and saved it under a new name. This means for you you could have a Voice with a very light Leslie effect and another with different effect but using the same basic VOICE or tone.  You can edit these parameters on the instrument or via third party PERFORMANCE editors.v Download and printout the documentation. You can edit the Leslie effect with about 4 levels of intensity. You can change the spin up and down times for horn and rotor separately and edit the spin speeds for rotor and horn. The large black control know on the front panel changes between Speed1 and Speed2.  The factory settings usually have a very slow rate and a fast rate. It works best if you have a two channel/stereo amplifier system. To do this, select the performance you want to edit. Select the PART.  Touch the EDIT button, where it ways 01:Common, down arrow to 02:Part, hit Enter to get to Part01 01:PlayMode, down arrow to 05:Voice Insert Effect, hit Enter and scroll up and down to find the parameter to change. At each option you can look at the sub-options with the DEC/NO and INC/YES buttons. The abbreviations are cryptic but looking in the manual helps to clarify what they might do. e.g. “S-FTmRotor” is the slow to fast transition time for the Rotor.  Preset controls the Leslie Effect with “Basic, Heavy etc”.  I don’t know what the “Drive” parameter is supposed to do. Read the OWNERS MANUAL on how to do a “SAVEAS” to a new Voice name.I have Voices called “SlowJamSlw”, “SlowJamStd” (stand factor speed), “SlowJamFst” (faster speed).  I created these at the same time so that they appear consecutively in the User Defined Voice list to make it easy the change from one speed to another during a song if necessary.  I find that Changing performances is cumbersome - 1 button push, wind the wheel which is speed sensitive or multiple button pushes. Best wishes George

Wow, thanks, George! Sounds like you’ve got it covered. I’m going to try this maybe tomorrow with an MX-61 and see if I can make it happen. Not sure I follow the “ PERFORMANCE editors.v” you mentioned… is that the name of the software?

Psicraft have a limited features Performance Editor called VycroMX and a higher feature one for a modest price. http://www.psicraft.com. John Melas produces a Performance and Voice Editor called MX Librarian http://www.jmelas.gr/motif or http://www.jmelas.gr/motif/products.php.

Hi George,
I’ve got an MX-61 at hand now, but still can’t seem to edit the effects as expected. Specifically, I’m trying to remove the vibrato from the WND 020 Sweet Flt voice. I can change the effects, but I can’t alter of remove what I hear as “vibrato.” Just wondering if you might try removing that effect on that 020 Sweet Flt voice using the MX menus. I don’t know where to go once I get to the screen that displays this:

Voice Insert Effect
DLY: TempoCrosDly (TempoCrosDly is flashing)

Thanks!

PS: Thinking I might not be able to dig down that far in MX menu screens, I downloaded VycorMX Performance Editor from psicraft, but seems I ended up the Pro version, as it asks for a license number… Anyway, never having used such software, I doubt I could get up to speed on it quick enough.
