I have come to a conclusion, i think the MOFX has a lot to offer for the money. It allows me to Play piano, have some arps, compose or create pattern based music. It has all the instruments of an arranger keyboard and more. It excels at creating your own sounds. It probably has most things one needs straight out of the box.
On top of that it is very expandable:
- flash memmory to load your own samples
- pedals including half damper pedal
- there are many Yamaha ipad apps(and general apps that add to its functionallity)
- it can be eassily integrated in almost any DAW and comes with a light versiom of cubase
- and so its the perfect choice if you want to expand your sounds even further with VSTs
- you can add Karma, which gives you another creative tool to gain inspiration with
- you can add Varranger on a PC or Mac and turn it into an arranger keyboard
And many more things, you can take this instrument in any direction you want, espescially if you add a PC or laptop to it. It even functions as an audio interface for your computer so that almost any PC or laptop of recent build will do.
So what does it lack, and what could be potential reasons for wanting even more, like a motif or kronos.
- the piano action of the keybed is not top knotch, but very acceptable for the price range.
- the keybed has no aftertouch
- there is no sampler ( its bigger brother the motif has) but that can be overcome with PC software
- it has no sliders
- the arps only partially replace the styles. Of your current arranger keyboard. But this can be overcome with buying the Varranger PC software. For which the MOXF can function as the soundsource
- there is no 16 channels firewire audio
- the VST editor is not supported in ableton and Bitwig, my favourite daws.
Motif and Kronos sure offer more, but at double the price, they are way out of my budget for this project..
However, i need to ask yourself if this is what i want, there are also very good other options that are less flexible but offer a better specialised experience…
- a piano or stage piano with better keyfeel like the kawai MP7 which also offers a lot of sounds, but no real recording and acompaniment tools. But then it can be made in anything you want by adding a pc.
-an arranger keyboard at that price range that has to offer a lot, Korg Pa900, Roalnd BK9 (76 synth keys) come to mind. But they miss the very important 88 weighted key action
- the Korg Havian30, which is a piano thatcomes with a build in arranger. But this falls short of the MOXFin almost every other aspect.
- or other workstations in that price range like the Roland Fa08 which has better keyfeel(slightly) and a great super natural synth build in but lacks some of the flexibillity towards computers that the MOXF has to offer. Same goes for Korg.
- and then there is Kurzweil, but its sounds less naturall (except for their pianos) and has way less options then the MOXF..
since i dont want to spend anything near the price of a Kronos or Motif, MOXF seems the best option by far, espescially since my laptop is allready fillled with some great sounding VSTs .. I will be adding Karma and Varranger to it and rewiring ableton with cubase on my laptop.. Having Karma, and the MOXF working as a perfect GM soundsource for Varranger really is what puts the MOXF way above the competition for me.
I think my mind is set for now, luckilly i still have atleast a month before a final decision is required.
