Indeed - I haven’t noticed PLG slots on either my XS6 or XF6. However, their predecessors had them, well before the Kronos was around. Perhaps Yamaha will bring them back  :-)

It was my hope that the next generation Motif will have all of those synth engines included.

Meanwhile, the Kronos has an SSD drive and virtual analog synth engines.  I still think it’s the XF that’s looking dated.

To me, an SSD shines as a super fast & vast RAM loader, & I would think it’s more suitable for studio or large performances that can absorb the multi-minute ~2.5+ GB RAM load. With a typically palatable short load time, the versatility is through the roof. And yet, for my particular quick set-up performance needs, I prefer 4GB of FLASH, ready in a standard XF-minute power up. (VA, hands down to Kronos.)

Exactly how were you able to get 4 GB of FLASH on your XF?  I thought the XF only had “2 x Flash Wave Slots (Up to 2GB)”.  You must have 2-2 GB FLASH boards.  Where did you get those 2 GB FLASH boards from?

I still don’t seem to be able to find a link to where you can purchase them, and in one of the threads I did find, someone said they were $500+ a piece.  I just bought a 1TB SSD for my computer that only cost $379.  I moved my Komplete Ultimate library there, and all of my large files load instantly.  To me, $500+ for 2 GB is absolutely ridiculous.

For what I want, a VI is not instant.

It’s a special type of flash memory, which allows data stored in it to be read (in terms of speed) just like Preset data in the ROM.

It is what it is - complaining or debating its value is kind of pointless. If you need that much storage but the price seems excessive, then an XF probably isn’t a good fit for your needs.

kb420, you’re not wrong. It is a lot. And it’s a main aspect that sets the XF apart from a computer or from the Kronos. I wonder if Kurzweil will combine the user customizability of the PC3K with the capacity of the Forte.

I do hope Yamaha continues with Flash RAM. I suppose the Kronos model works for me, if the existing 4gb max can be met, can be loaded in a minute, and exhibits low frequency of loading errors necessitating re-loading, or worse, re-starting. I.e., I like that my Yamaha Motif XF7 is very much a performance instrument. Yes, it’s run by a computer. I’m ok with the computer to be dated, as long as everything about the instrument is rock-solid, especially the performance latency for its readily available sounds.

5pinDIN, you have crystallized my thoughts precisely.

And to be brutally honest, I’m sick and tired of the amount of time wasted in comparing the XF and the Kronos. They are two completely different boards. If you think the Motif is dated, it’s very simple: “don’t buy it”! Buy the Kronos, if you prefer that. If the flash boards are too expensive, you’re correct. It is steep. No point in complaining about it. You get what you pay for. If you don’t need it, look elsewhere.

I owned a blue meanie (Korg Triton Extreme). I played Yamaha all my tender years before the Korg. Personally, I now know which one I now prefer. I think it depends on who you are and how close the instrument is to matching how you like to express yourself. So, good luck. What I’m sure of, is that a part of you will always miss that ES that was stolen. You miss it and for a reason. So, Phil may be correct, if you don’t mind me repeating.
