Does it matter here that my Rack does NOT have MIDI out or thru?

Lack of a MIDI-Thru connector wouldn’t matter, since the Thru setting I’ve been referring to is a software setting in the Editor.

In addition, the MIDI-Out connection can function as MIDI-Thru when the Rack XS is set for that. See MIDI Soft Thru on page 100 of the Owner’s Manual. This has nothing to do with the Editor’s Thru setting - I’m only mentioning it because you brought up the topic.

Please read/reread the following:
1) The first [NOTE] on page 17 of the Owner’s Manual.
2) The Port 3 information on page 18.
When the Ports and Thru settings are properly configured for the software you’re running, it will work correctly. Rack models don’t function the same way as those with built-in keyboards. If you find this unacceptable, you might want to get a full keyboard model.

That being said, the owner’s manual shows that it has both MIDI IN and MIDI OUT?????????

If you own a Motif-Rack XS that doesn’t have a 5-pin DIN MIDI-Out connector, please post a picture of its rear panel.

I’ve never seen a Motif-Rack XS that doesn’t basically look like the diagram on page 12 of the Owner’s manual.

I stand corrected… There is a MIDI OUT connector just no MIDI THRU.  I’m trying to figure out what would I use the MIDI OUT connector for.

Can you explain to me what the “ports” are inside the Rack and what they are used for or point me to a document that does explain them?  I think if understand that, I can better understand what you are telling me to do.

Being a microcontroller enginner, I just paid $9.95 for and downloaded the service manual for the Rack. It has a block diagram and a bunch of other good stuff but it doesn’t help me in my above port question.

Thanks
Pierre

The block diagram, chip pinouts, etc., definitely aren’t going to help in this case. See page 18 of the Owner’s Manual.

Well… It did make reference to a “test” project for Cubase

I don’t normally suggest running the Test Program except for diagnosing hardware problems. However, if you feel the need to run the Test Program, there’s no particular reason to use the MIDI-based one via Cubase - the internal one works well.

Congrats. Now that you understand the process, it can be applied to most other MIDI applications, such as DAWs. They just have to be configured once, and from then on the routing should be correct each time they’re used.
