I was looking through the Data List at all the Drum kits on my Motif XF8.
and being able to control the Motif’s many drum sounds with the electronic drum kit?

The Motif drum kit mapping is mostly based on the GM (General MIDI) standard. (Look at the GM kit mapping and compare some others to it.) Many electronic kits are also mapped that way. Some editing might be required, and obviously that could vary with the chosen XF kit and the electronic drum controller. If you don’t already have an electronic kit, but are considering getting one, I’d suggest downloading a manual first to see how easily things can be reassigned, if necessary. |

There’s no question that triggering your drum sounds from a set of MIDI drum pads will give you immeasurably more realistic results - to be honest even if you’re only a modest drummer. An experienced drummer will make the sounds absolutely spring to life. Mapping will not be a problem at all. Essentially, this is the ‘system’ used by Keyfax to create all of the Twiddly.Bits libraries. MIDI, handled carefully, can create incredibly subtle, nuanced and inspiring material. |

I downloaded the TD-15 manual:
Yamaha’s Motif drum kits won’t match the note numbering used by the TD-15. On page 22 of the TD-15 manual it explains how to change that for each pad. I’d suggest that you save a backup of the TD’s data before changing anything (page 38). Of course, you could always do a factory reset of the TD (page 46) if things go wrong.
This thread should help a lot in setting the TD’s MIDI note numbering to match the Motif:

You’re welcome. I wasn’t familiar with Superior Drummer 2, so I took a look at Toontrack’s website. It looks interesting, but since I’ve never used it I can’t really comment further. Between the XF and some libraries, I have a sufficient collection of such sounds that I don’t anticipate a need for more - at this time :-)Â . Everyone has a different need for such things, so you really have to decide for yourself what mix of hardware and software best fills it. Also, that’s likely to vary from project to project. |
