OK Marcus… but I’m getting dizzy trying to keep up with your rapidly changing member name and avatar. Â :-) Actually, I thought IndianaJones and your pic were a good fit. |

I’m just thinking the game warden’s gonna be angry when she discovers Marcus has her hat. Hee.
I never watched Stars Wars either but I recall some time ago there were Jedi Knights here, in lieu of gurus. Maybe the Jedi’s were hip musicians? Never got the connection. |

“whoo-ah” is actually from “Scent Of A Woman” not “Scarface”....

Gentlemen, if we’re through sorting out The Hat, I have a report. I achieved 95% success, overall huge hit - but I am perplexed by the missing 5%. First, huge thanks to the forum.
> Flew to ABQ with 3 flash drives, my PC (Melas), and FL1024 in tow.
---> Board gives me a message “new hardware, installation ... (something something?) ...” I don’t remember the exact text, do our gurus know what this message is? --- I pressed EXIT, not certain what to do. I then put a USB stick, it recognzed it and listed my files. I loaded my All w/o samples, with FL1 without samplesa set.
> My library loaded in 10-20 seconds, a snap.
> Of note - on one song I have a voice which is a 30 sec sampled clip (sampled through my A/D, saved to FL1). I assigned the sample voice to a low key. I specifically checked this Performance, I pressed my bottom F and the sample plays perfect. We even sound checked the whole band to this song as one of our check songs to dial in the FOH, it worked perfectly. GREAT!
-------
I go backstage before we go on, I ask one of the stage hands to go make sure the Motif is powered on before we go on stage (we’re doing the full on rock star entrance). he goes on stage, I don’t know what he did or if he saw any message. We go on stage, I see they didn’t leave it on, as its back to startup. I switch to Perf U1 A1, my starting program is there, I turn down and hit one note just to verify - its all go! We’re starting with a cool keyboard centered hit, and its on. We start the set with my intro, crowd erupts, its on - this is fricken awesome rock show! We get to Song 6, which has the “sampled intro” I had just confirmed worked 2 hrs ago. I press the key to start it ... and nothing. it doesn’t work. I press the key again. nada. ZIP NOTHING. quick improv on stage, we scratch that and kick off the song with a drum (dual toms) riff, band starts the “HEY” chants, and I do an organ riff that was supposed to come in after the 30 second sample. We pull it off, crowd loves it, loves the entire set, loves all the other bands, its a total rock show. that crowd went home happy. It dawns on me one other voice I think may have sounded a bit lacking, like maybe missing a (FL1 wav) element? I only use one or two flash stored wavs in this set, mostly use preset wavs. I walk out with that nagging “dang it - my sample didn’t trigger”!, although the overall thing was a total success, crowd never knew (they never do, do they?), and we rocked it to a roar of approval. I got home Monday, put my FL back in FL1, powered up, went to the song ... sample works perfectly when I pressed the key Can anyone deduce what happened? I have another gig in 3 weeks with this band. I’ll go to an mp3 track saved on my ipod plugged into my A/D input jacks if I don’t get why this failed. My suspicion - I should have pressed Enter instead of Exit when the keyboard asked about installing new hardware? Anybody able to confirm exactly what I should have done or not done? damnit - that was a fricken rock show. thats why we (some of us) do this! |

Congrats on having a basically good experience.

Before I offer any conjecture on the part that didn’t go right, I have a question. Does the above mean that of everything you have stored on your flash module, very little of it was actually used for the gig? That is, other than the things you mentioned, nothing else was dependent on flash module content? |

yes, the overwhelming majority of waveforms I use for this set are preset waveforms. fortunately (perhaps?) If this had been my Cars tribute instead of Bon Jovi, and FL1 didnt “work”, it would have been a big deal. I use alot of stored flash waveforms in that set.
I think the key clues are:
I installed it back in my XF7 and it worked fine again, so I didn’t scramble any data in the flash. but my board never knew the FL1024 was taken out and put back in. it was turned off before I took it out and FL was 0put back in before it was turned back on. As far as it knows, it never left :). I’m thinking I should have done something other than EXIT when I saw that “new hardware” message, I just don’t know. |

If the rental XF had been seeing the samples on your flash module, turning it off and re-powering shouldn’t change that. Is there any possibility the sample that played correctly at first, and then didn’t when the XF was re-powered, was in User RAM when you made the “All” file? If it was, then loading the “All” file would have placed the sample in the rental unit’s User RAM, but since that memory is volatile, it would be lost when the XF was turned off. When you moved the flash module the rental came with from slot 1 to slot 2, and put yours in slot 1, the XF saw “new hardware” because it now had two flash modules. I’m not sure what happens when you EXIT from that situation. I had originally suggested temporarily removing the flash module if the rental unit had one, and installing yours. That might have avoided the problem. I would suggest that you call Yamaha support and ask them about this. |

I don’t think so. I created the sample on Tuesday evening via A/D inputs in Voice mode. I copied the sample to FL1 and saved the new voice, assigned it to a Performance and saved the Perf. I powered down and went to rehearsal, powered on without loading any files, it worked fine. The next night, I powered on again at home and it worked, also with no files. Thats when I made the All File w/o samples. My deduction is nothing could be in USR memory when I made the All File. At the venue, I moved the other flash card to FL2 and put mine in FL1. I powered on and saw that message, I see your thought it could be referring to FL2, not FL1. I pressed EXIT, am I supposed to do something different? This I don’t know. The board didn’t seem to mind that I pressed EXIT, it booted up fine. I loaded my All File w/o samples and the sampled voice worked when I checked it. Then we did sound check and it worked during the song. Then, later during our set after the board was powered down and back up, it didnt. When I got home, I put my FL1 back in my home board Monday night and booted up, I didnt load a file from USB stick, all I did was put the FL1 back in and power on. It worked fine again. It was odd. I’m perplexed. I did not look at what version of firmware was in the loaner board. As I’ve confessed, I am not close to current on my home board. But the sample played at sound check, thats what baffles / bothers me. Thanks on point 2, I see your thought now, my thought at the time was I didn’t want to be responsble for their FL, so just put it in FL2 so it doesn’t get lost. Maybe that was the problem? If it was that, or if it was I pressed “EXIT”, or something else I did or didn’t do, it would be an easy operator correction next time. |

So the Bon Jovi gang liked my contributions enough to just book me for two more upcoming big gigs. The minor key glitch didn’t leave me tainted. whew. that, and I bumped this thread because nobody has yet solved my riddle of the disappearing sample voice. I can’t go through life not knowing wtf. Last night, again powered on, again it worked fine. Also - looking at my board, it dawned on me I am not sure if I pressed EDIT or EXIT button, its very possible I pressed EDIT. Does that add a possible explanation? I am baffled. I hope BM returns soon from a well-earned vacation, he can solve every XF riddle every written or told. |

If you followed the proper procedure, in theory things should have worked as expected. You might find this thread interesting:
Since Yamaha doesn’t always reveal what things are fixed by an OS update, it might be prudent to install the latest on your own XF, and to ask that the same be done for the rental unit next time.
Based on your previous experience…
If you haven’t already done so, I still think that speaking to Yamaha Support might be useful. |

I agree.
If it were me, I’d find another XF to practice the flash module insertion issue.
If it were me, I’d have on a separate USD Drive with the latest XF os firmware on it to install on any board sitting in front of me anywhere.
And then install your All File that was created on your unit the day before hitting the road.
In a nutshell, ( using term loosely ), control your purchase of the rental more like a purchase of, ‘rent-to-own’, setting it up like you just bought it and will be taking it home!
Most certainly!
